Space is one of the many Design Elements and Principles. It is the areas around, between and within the forms, shapes, colors, and lines that compose the work. Positive and negative space can be used in this element through black and white and/or the foreground and background in the artwork. The idea of positive and negative space is to understand the meaning of the artwork and can create an illusion. Maurits Cornelis Escher was a Dutch artist who made many positive and negative space artworks. I have some of his artwork presented. What do you see? Feel free to discuss with your family!
The challenge this week is to create a positive and negative space artwork. All you need is paper, glue, and scissors! Have fun creating! |

This is a lesson we were going to do together this spring, 4th grade. Maybe you can figure it all out by looking at my website, watching the videos and seeing the example toward the bottom of this page. It's a really fun lesson to do! You could use any kind of wire that you can find. You could use an old wire hanger. You can even take apart an electoral wire (that you might not need again) and use those wires to make this. You could even use thin strips of tinfoil that your rolled into thin lines.
