Dance Party
Keith Haring and his figures:
Keith Haring was an American artist whose pop art and graffiti-like work grew out of the New York City street culture of the 1980s. Much of his work includes turned into social activism. He became very good at expressing emotion and tension using his stylized figures and expression lines to convey movement.
Look at the movement that Haring shows with his people. Do you notice that the arms and legs are bent? The action lines show us they are moving, right? Can you try to move your arms and legs like his characters do? You can stand up! Try it out. How are you making those movements work? Are you balancing on your feet? Are you bending your legs at the knees and arms at the elbows? How about your wrists and ankles?
Let's study movement a little more:
~DANCE PARTY~
Play the song, dance party, freeze a few times and look at your neighbor's movements.
Have students tactically feel their arm and how it bends... "your arm goes over, then up, then over again for your hand."
