1st GradeEric CarleEric Carle's art is distinctive and instantly recognizable. His artwork is created in collage technique, using hand-painted papers, which he cuts and layers to form bright and cheerful images. ... Children also enjoy working in collage and many send him pictures they have made themselves, inspired by his illustrations.Eric Carle was an American Artist and Author. He became famous with his first published book called, "The Very Hungry Caterpillar" in 1969. As an artist, he created his art by painting paper and then collaging those pieces into beautiful pieces of art. These are the images you see in his books. He was born in New York, but his family moved to Germany when he was young. He ended up graduating from an art school in Germany. He finally made it back to the USA in 1952 and worked as a graphic designer in New York and later became the art director of an advertising agency. The first book he wrote was a collaboration in 1967 on Brown Bear, Brown Bear, What Do You See? And, he followed that with his Very Hungry Caterpillar book quickly after in 1969. He used collage to create his illustrations. Collage art is created by cutting different pieces of paper into different shapes and creating a picture out of it. Carle painted acrylic paint on top of tissue paper and then used the dried tissue paper to create his collages. |

We are first going to paint papers to make different textures for our collage animals that we will make:
This is how Eric Carle did his artwork. First how he painted it, and then how he collaged those neat papers.
I want you to chose an animal to make out of the colorful papers.
****Think about the shapes it would take to make your animal. Draw your animal out in your sketchbook first, so that you can break it down to shapes that you will then cut out of the paper, and assemble into your animal.
