It was stolen THREE times!!!! Each time it was cut out of it's frame when it was stolen!
Mona Lisa became more popular after each time it was stolen. It really wasn't popular until it was stolen.

This is a picture that someone did through computer re-imaging. They added the colors that they thought it would have looked like when DaVinci painted it. They did careful research and understood what colors he was using at the time and took into consideration the Renaissance time period, as well. Pretty cool to think this is what is might have really looked like 500+ years ago. ------------> |
The Mona Lisa painting was started in 1503
However, it wasn't finished until 1516, while he was visiting a king in France. That's how it got to France! The real painting is only about 30 inches x 20 inches now. What is Mona Lisa worth today? About $860 million!

DaVinci was not just an artist but a very intelligent scientist as well. Much of what he invented and discovered made huge impacts for future discoveries.
Take a look at a page in his sketchbook. He wrote everything in his sketchbooks in mirror image, so that no one could easily steal his ideas and findings. He also thought of himself as more of a Scientist, rather than an artist. He would study the real human body, looking (in real life) at muscles and drawing detailed sketches of what he saw. This gave him great knowledge in making a human body in the right way.
He was actually the one that figured out how to get people to fly!
