How to draw a body
(or the fancy name is "portrait").
So many times, as an art teacher, I hear from adults, "I can't even draw a stick person." I don't want my art students to grow up and say this. So, we are going to start young! Let's learn how to draw a real person (or a portrait - a portrait is when an artist draws a picture of a person)! Look at this step by step worksheet. It uses SHAPES to draw a person! We've learned, and talked a lot about, how to use shapes to draw things, right? Now we are going to use those shapes to draw a person. Are you ready? Let's try doing a few practice bodies to start with. Let's try using the worksheet to draw a body first. Then, we will try using the video. It's similar, but a little different. We all learn in different ways. Maybe one of these ways will be better for you? After you have practiced a few times. You might want to keep going... you can look at the step by step worksheet toward the bottom of this web page and get really fancy with your bodies that you draw.
Let's talk about some famous portraits:
This is Leonardo DaVinci. He painted and drew portraits AND self portraits.
Leonardo DaVinci painted the "Mona Lisa" in 1503
|
This is Romare Bearden. He made portraits out of collages.
He created this collage in 1967 called "Jazz Village". You have to know how to draw people before you can actually make a collage that will look right.

Once you know how to draw the general body, you can try to add other details to your picture. OR, you can move the arms and legs by adding elbows and knees to bend those arms and legs. Try it out!
Now that you know how to draw a portrait, let's talk about a SELF portrait. What is a self portrait?
A self portrait is a drawing that an artist does of him/herself! Artists have drawn self portraits all throughout history. Let's look at a few....
