Primary Colors/Mondrian
Pieter Mondrian was a Dutch painter who was born on March 7, 1872 and died on February 1, 1944. He is thought of as one of the greatest artists of the 20th century. He is known for being one of the pioneers of 20th-century abstract art. He started as a painter who painted trees and things he looked at, but then started changing the way things looked into very geometric and simple elements, ending with simply using shapes to create his paintings.
Here is a tree that he painted in the middle of his career. You can see that it still looks like a tree, but you can also see how he was starting to see shapes between the branches.

He had a deep interest in how the primary colors looked next to each other, or by a white square. He loved using just the primary colors most.
Another artist who loved to play with colors:
Ellsworth Kelly
What are the primary colors?
Primary colors are colors that can not be made in any way. You have to either buy them at the store, or find them in nature to make your own pigment. What would you find in nature to make red, blue and yellow paint?
